Discovering Aotearoa 

Who discovered Aotearoa?

Well Captain James Cook sighted New Zealand on 6th October 1769 and landed at Poverty bay two days later. He drew a detailed and accurate maps of the country and wrote about the Moari people. 

However many people believe that Kupe was the first person to step foot in Aotearoa. Some people think that the name of Aotearoa came from Kupe's wife (in some versions, his daughter)  was watching  the horizon and called "He ao! He also navigated from Hawaiki to Aotearoa useing the stars, sun and ocean swells. 

                      

Other people believe that Abel Tasman a person from the Netherlands how is said to sight New Zealand, Tasmania, Tonga and the Fiji Islands. 

My own cultures history

Hello if you don't know me already my name is Miraj and I come from Fiji but I speak Hindi here is a little bit of breef history of my culture. What is important to my family and I is of how we treat other people and  also to pray every single day whether it is just a simple prayer or not we pray every day.

This week I am starting Summer Learning Journey for this first time, sorry for how late I was for this blog post. Anyways lets get started with this adventure.

Setting Sail And Exploring The World

How did Polynesian navigators travel the pacific ocean with the stars, sun and ocean swells? 

Traditionally Polynesian navigators used stars to help navigate where they were going. They used a device called a star compass, a star compass is used to help memorize the rising points and setting points of the brightest and most distinctive stars and planets to set direction. The ability to read the sky is a great skill to have especially in the olden days. The pattern's of the stars and rhythms of the ocean guided them by night and the colour of sky and sun, shapes of clouds, and the direction from which the swells were coming guided them by day. 

                           Who was the first person to figure out how to navigate with stars? 

The first person to figure out how to read the stars was Thomas Hubbard Sumner. Thomas discovered  (the later so called) line of position or circle of equal altitude, he (Thomas) named "parallel  of equal altitude" on a voyage form South Carolina to Scotland  in 1837.

Today I will be telling you some facts about New Zealand

 Fact one did you know that the north island was called Te Ika a Maui( which became New Zealand ). It is called Te Ika a Maui because Maui caught the north island ( just letting you know it's the biggest fish in the world).

Fact two on the 6 of February 1840 the treaty of Waitangi was signed. If your wondering what the treaty of Waitangi is, then I'll tell you. It's an agreement with, the British crown and the Maori. So that they can live in harmony.

Fact three Did you know that the sun let's us have 24 hours in a day because Maui, and his brothers went to slow the sun down with the jawbone from their great grandmother, and some flack ropes.

World Wild Life Fund What are they saving from being extinct

Today I am going to tell you winch animals are  World wild life fund for short WWF. They are trying to save the Samar seals their are only 360 left. Their trying to help by building snow banks because they reproduce in the show banks and help the population grow.

Would I like to be a DOC ranger

Today im going to tell you if I would want to be a DOC ranger. Im going to list three things that are good about being a Doc ranger and three things that is bad about being a DOC ranger.

Good thing about being a DOC ranger.

1. They save reptiles and other types of animals

2. They protect wild life 

3. They protect the environment

Three bad things 

1. They don't have that many staff 

2. They cant go every that they could go before because the close down

3. getting bitten a lot or even posited 

So In my opinion I will not become a DOC ranger because I might get bitten or even posited.

My Fantastic beast

Today Im going to make my own fantastic beast like J.K Rowling did in the Harry Potter Books and movies.  My monster would have phoenix wing and a dragon head. It will also have the body of a phoenix and a dementor combined,  the demtors from the Harry Potter books/movies. It will have a voice of a phoenix it will be able to talk. When you feel it it will feel like a bird and it will look like it is hovering but it has feather,and a body. The gender of this species of beasts will all be male.

The ferns of Fiji and new Zealand.

Today im going to tell you about some ferns from new Zealand and my home town Fiji.

New Zealand-All blacks-forest ferns-rugby    I like the uniform because It was a custom logo and it has the ALG logo on it.

New Zealand- Warriors-forest fern-Rugby   I like the uniform because it has a lot of colors and because they support Vodafone.

Fiji- scorer-tree fern     I like the Fiji scorer  uniforms because there's a nice patterns on it and it has a DLK logo on it.

Today i'm going to tell you that I want  to go to the Tāne Mahuta tree because I can see an ancient  tree that has been there for a long time. It's also the biggest tree I know that's why I want to go.

 Today im going to tell you about my home town in Fiji we used to live in north Fiji and it was amazing.

Our home in Fiji is amazing because we have a tire swing and over all not just at our house it's super hot more hot than New Zealand. Over all I lover my country and thinks its the hottest place on earth.

This is three facts about new Zealand

1. Did you know that the name Aotearoa was found when a woman saw a long white cloud and can'd  it Aotearoa The  land of the long white  cloud.

2. Also did you know that the sun goes slower because Maui a long time ago set on a journey to slow down the sun and he used his magical jaw bone to seceded that's why the sun goes slow. 

3.  Did you know the Earth has mutable layer besides the core the core is really hot if you don't wear a protective suit then you will die.
